It 'Certainty' Looks Bad

An email accused The Omnivore of being too full of certainty to listen--and, to be fair, The Omnivore is stuffed full of certainty--the guy is right about that. But "too full to listen"? No. No, that's a dodge. In fact, The Omnivore listens all too well. The Omnivore listens well enough to hear things you didn't think you said--but you actually did (yes, yes, The Omnivore knows your instinctive come-back here. Trust The Omnivore--he's talking about stuff you legit meant--but don't wanna cop to!).

What is The Omnivore talking about? Well, it's like this: Right now polls show Biden up by around 10 points nationally. In one sense, this is not high enough--a dumpster fire of an administration like Trump should be ejected into the sun by reasonable people--but in another sense, this, The Omnivore thinks, is the result of Trumpers just not answering any polling questions.

Not because they are savvy and pulling a fast one on the hated Nate Silver--no, because they are butt hurt and hate the idea of answering questions about their embarrassing strong man. Biden isn't really up by 10 points in Florida--that's just about impossible.

The Omnivore is certain.

What The Omnivore asked this Educated Trump Voter: "What the fuck is it that you see in this guy??" And followed it up with asking if the directive to take nursing babies away from their illegal immigrant mothers was something the guy liked. The Omnivore averred that it just about couldn't be the case--this guy may have voted for Trump but he has children. Surely he can't imagine having one of his children--still nursing--ripped away from the mother and think "yeah, I want me more of that!"

Can he?

Turns Out? He Can. He Did. He Does.

Is this person a monster? Well . . . (Trump, his hero, just called Kamala a 'Monster'---as she is a black woman who doesn't "know her place," The Omnivore is going to suggest that this person is not actually upset by that--right? So 'monster' is, it turns out, on the table.)

But here's how this works--What our guy thinks is happening is that The Omnivore is zeroing in like a laser-guided missile on the absolute worst instance of something that may have happened (this is reported in the NYT that the policy under Trump was "family separation no matter how young") and was possibly--maybe even likely--reported out of proportion by a left-wing media that hates Trump.

In other words: The Guy thinks "something bad may have happened--but The Omnivore and the crying liberals have manufactured a context that isn't the real one and is then trying to use it as a moral stepladder to get on top of their cultural enemies on the right."

Right?

The guy is free to tell The Omnivore this isn't the case--but this is probably about as good as it gets.

And it ain't good, Dave.

It doesn't say anything fucking good about you at all.

How Come? Isn't That At Least A Reasonable Take

Back in college when The Omnivore was a Republican and saw the caricatures of Republicans as overblown and unfair, yeah: maybe it might've flown--but today? In October of 2020? No. Why not? Well, guy--here we go.

  1. You voted explicitly for this. The single issue of nursing babies being taken away from their mothers (which probably happened only a few times) was directly on the ballot. It was part of the Build The Wall strategy. When we heard about family separations (which, yes, started under Obama--but Obama sought to minimize it, Trump to maximize it) your guy, Steven Miller, was put in charge. His white nationalist leanings were well known to you--and you excused them as ethnocentric  (a euphemism, right?)--but this was entirely predictable and it's entirely on you.
  2. It's The Tip Of the Iceberg. Never mind that our country and economy is being ravaged by a pandemic so that your guy--your champion, himself now the super-spreader--could try to keep the stock-market up and the numbers high so he could win reelection. Never mind that White Supremacists are the number 1 domestic terror threat (check the latest DHS report if you disbelieve) and that they have consistently and constantly cheered Trump's election . . . along with you (how's that euphemism lookin' now?). Never mind that our national reputation is in shambles and that one of our claims to fame--an orderly transition of power by a stable national government--is in actual danger (yes, the odds are low--but, uh, no, son: the damage as you fucking well know will be huge if the wrong sets of events happen. And, no, Trump legitimately winning isn't the wrong set of events The Omnivore is talking about and you better know that).
  3. This Was, Of Course, Predictable. You don't believe it--or maybe you just decided to roll the dice? Either way, yes: it's worse than The Omnivore thought it would be--but the stuff that has the possibility to really wreck us (the absolute corruption of the DoJ--yes, yes, The Omnivore is aware of Holder. No, Bill Barr is in another class all by himself with this and, again, you know this--you just don't like it) is all part and parcel of Trump's standard approach.
  4. You still support him. If the image of babies being taken from their mothers didn't change your mind? Nothing is going to. If Trump humiliating you and all his other supporters--and our nation---at the debate doesn't make a difference? Nope, nothing will change your mind. If you did change your mind--if you're voting for Biden (he's a white male, right? You can get behind that at least without any ego damage?) The Omnivore at this point ain't real sympathetic.
So, no: The specific atrocity that you are supporting--abject cruelty against innocents in the name of bogus national security concerns is a fractal part of an entire cluster-fuck of a presidency that you have plugged into and cannot extract yourself from. It's indicative of exactly what Trump promised you and, more or less, writ large, what he has delivered for you. You got what you paid for and what you paid for is, frankly, a moral abomination.

So What Are You Afraid To Say?

What you're afraid to say out loud is that you felt you HAD to go with Trump because the America that you "owned" was slipping away from you. It was becoming brown and coarse and spanish or urban--and, well, lefty. A woman president was fine if she was the right kind--but not Hillary. No--and--your marriage was being depreciated by the gays while your citizenship was being devalued by the immigrants.

What you thought--what you still think--is that you're being robbed: robbed by people like The Omnivore who just don't care about the future of people like you and the history of this nation. They're willing to let things go--like all the Obama scandals (his use of the IRS to go after the Tea Party, right?) in order to secure just a little more power so that they can use their microaggressions and diversity training to stamp down the White Man and secure the forever-vote of people unlike you and yours--the vote of those people looking for that hand-out instead of the hand up.

So you had to take a stand: Trump was the only other choice . . . so what choice did you have?

Right? That's what you think--but that's what you're afraid to say out loud because it's a lie and The Omnivore (and you) know it.

The Omnivore, it turns out, is pretty certain.
